New technology developed by Cornell University students could prevent conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome that are common in the workplace. After spending long hours of the day working in Cornell laboratories, doctoral students Apoorva Kiran and Jason Guss realized the commonality of pain from repetitive motion tasks. That’s where the idea for Orthofit was born. With fellow doctoral student Pankaj Singh, the three started working on their idea to prevent musculoskeletal hand injuries in the workplace. “We know that people are getting injured because of the nature of the work and when we studied it, we realized that carpal tunnel syndrome…

Key Points – Hobbyist and commercial drone usage is increasing in the U.S. leading to a spike in licensing of operators. The Park School at Ithaca College held its first workshop to help people within the school get their 107 license. Eight students fill a tiny classroom on the top floor of Ithaca College’s Park School of Communications. This is the third and final day of a weekend long workshop preparing them for one test. Once they leave here, each will take a test to get their 107 license, the technical term for a drone license.

Bramble is a store in Press Bay Alley in downtown Ithaca that provides locally sourced herbs and herbal health consultations for the community. Bramble is co-owned by four herbalists: Darcy Black, Amanda David, Ciele Gladstein and Jennifer Whitmore. Black is a birth doula as well as an herbalist. “The most unique thing about this store s that everything here is made by local herbalists, so if you begin learning about how plants work in the body and plant medicine then you can go into your own backyard and in your region and create your own medicine.” Black said herbalism has…

By Rachel Wolfgang and Mary Ford As one of the superstars of the scientific community, Carl Sagan contributed to the academic community while publishing other popular science works to bring science to the masses. Posting memories on social media help people remember them, even if the events are less significant than others, researchers at Cornell University have found. Qi Wang, a professor in Cornell’s School of Human Ecology, led the research. Wang instructed participants to keep a diary to record everything that happened to them during the day, whether they had posted about them online and how important the events were to them. A surprise memory test after one week revealed that participants were more likely to remember the events they posted on social media, even if they were less important than other events.…

By: Christie Citranglo, Sydney O’Shaughnessy, Sarah Chaneles Dilmun Hill Student Farm at Cornell University has been harvesting vegetables for the community for 20 years — now with a new high tunnel. The farm is a student- and volunteer-run organization that harvests for the Community Supported Agriculture. Workers grow and harvest vegetables for the CSA supporters, and the supporters reap both the risks and benefits of local farming. However, with their newly installed high tunnel, farmers at Dilmun Hill will be able to extend the growing season of most of their crops. High tunnels are similar to greenhouses as they provide…

Not only is Tompkins County in a drought, but 24 counties in the state of New York are currently in varying degrees of natural disasters. The severe drought has been going on since late spring when a high-pressure system sat over the area for a prolonged period of time. A high-pressure system is a region of high-pressure air moving counterclockwise. It is also called an anticyclone. High-pressure systems are usually larger and last for a long period of time. What is the most important fact about high-pressure systems for Ithacans? They cause the area affected to be dry…

by Cecilia Morales and Alexa Salvato On a crisp, sunny Saturday in Ithaca, New York, over a dozen Ithacans gathered in Carpenter Circle, clad in overalls and hiking boots, to spend their morning working hard in Ithaca Community Garden. Sept. 24 was this month’s workday at the garden. The workday system allows gardeners with plots to help out in the garden as part of a payoff system for the cost of their plots, completing various tasks to maintain the garden. “Basically we work on the compost, we mow, we have a couple food donation plots, that people work on,…
